Cover work for Friday 14th Feb

Happy Valentines day – but what is love and what does it look like from the perspective of an MRI? Want to know more then check out the following Videos (BUT NOT IN THE LESSON – you can save this for your own time at the weekend)

If we stuck you in an MRI what would your brain look like today?

As the IB wants you to be aware of “the international dimension”, and one of the 5 pillars of The Lyceum is cosmopolitanism you might also like to watch Ira Trivedi: The case for arranged marriages. Other cultures have a different approach to love and marriage, which approach do you think is best?

Today I want you to start off by reviewing what you can remember about DNA. Spend the first 10 minutes (without any resources) summarising everything you can about this amazing molecule in the form of a spider diagram (or simple notes if you are not a visual learner). Can you identify from your knowledge which sections are from the SL curriculum and which are from the AHL curriculum?

So what extra do we need to learn today

7.2.1 State that DNA replication occurs in a 5’3’ direction

7.2.2 Explain the process of DNA replication in prokaryotes, including the role of enzymes (helicase, DNA polymerase,RNA primase and DNA ligase), Okazaki fragments and deoxynucleoside triphosphates.

7.3.1 State that transcription is carried out in a 5’3’ direction.

7.3.2 Distinguish between the sense and antisense strands of DNA

7.3.3 Explain the process of transcription in prokaryotes, including the role of thepromoter region, RNA polymerase, nucleoside triphosphates and the terminator.

7.3.4 State that eukaryotic RNA needs the removal of introns to form mature mRNA.

Now I know that in the guide this is down as 4 hours of work, but while covering topic 3 we did introduce the majority of these ideas and so you should be able to complete this in the lesson today.

What I would like you to do is to read the above curriculum statements  and then pages 197 to 203 of the Pearson text book – make notes to cover the curriculum statements and then try questions  4-6 pg 200 and questions 7-8 pg 203.

To help your understanding you can also work through these two slideshares that we have used before DNA STRUCTURE and Transcription and Translation.

Don’t forget to prepare for the topic test next Wednesday – look forward to seeing you all on Monday
